ManSafe for Roofing
Roofing systems are continuously developing to give architects the opportunity to design ever more demanding building
envelopes which must adhere to strict health, safety, environmental and legislative guidelines. Latchways is the only
company that focuses solely on the development of fall arrest system design and have built a global reputation
for providing innovative solutions for the most testing engineering and architectural challenges.
The Science of Constant Force™
The definition of Constant Force is "The mechanism used to provide a consistent method of absorbing mechanical energy
and controlling tension within the system to a pre-determined Constant Force". The application of this principle to
fall arrest has created a revolution in system design. The graph below summarises this by showing the increased
load absorption capacity of the Constant Force post in comparison to a traditional rigid anchor post.
Safety Regualtions
The Construction, Design and Management regulations came into force in March 1995 to offer further protection to
worker safety. This was reinforced when the Construction Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996 Statutory No 1592
Regulation 6 was introduced. It was incorporated into the HSE code of practice, which states, "it is the responsibility
of the employer to ensure that any employee required to work at a height of 2m or more must be suitably protected
from any potential fall hazards. In the event of a fall the equipment used must be of sufficient strength to arrest
a workers fall." This stimulated the demand for certified Fall Arrest Systems, which meet all the necessary safety
standards. Latchways systems comply with:
- European Council Directive 89/686/EEC
- European Standard EN795
- South African Standard SABS795
- Australian Standard 1891.2
- OSHA (USA) Standard 1926.502
All Latchways systems are CE marked and hold EC Declarations of Conformity. Latchways is also an ISO 9002 company.
Load control Latchways' reputation has been built on our unique technical solutions to arrest a falling person and
control the resulting forces (loads). The capacity of a system and the loads generated in the event of a fall depend
on the strength of the structure, supports, components and cable. The Constant Force post has an integral energy
absorbing coil which in the event of a fall will absorb the force generated. The Constant Force technology ensures
that the load will not exceed 10kN. This allows the post to be fixed to a relatively delicate roof structure
without the requirement to attach through the roof.
